PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
ISA EXAM PREPARATION
This course is designed for arboriculture professionals including municipal park workers, tree care experts, tree pruners, landscape architects and landscapers and growers who are preparing to write the International Society of Arboriculture Certification exam. Topics will include tree biology, pruning, safe work practices, diagnosis, and other arboriculture-related topics. The Arborist’s Certification study guide is required and available at Pacific Arborist Supplies (604-924-3361) or may be ordered on-line from the International Society of Arboriculture (www.isa-arbor.com) At least 3 years of full-time industry experience is required to write the exam (the exam is not included in the course) and students must register with ISA prior to writing the exam. TREE IDENTIFICATION – INTRODUCTION
There are over 100 different species of trees that successfully grow in the Greater Vancouver area. You will learn how to identify most of these trees. We will discuss each tree with respect to form, texture, habit, foliage, flower and fruit characteristics, cultural requirements, pest issues and use in gardens and specialty landscapes. Designed for arborists, park professionals, tree pruners, landscape architects and gardeners. The first class is an informal classroom discussion of basic classification techniques. The remaining classes are visits to our local parks and gardens. These outdoor learning classes will meet directly at the parks; transportation is not provided. Please dress appropriately for the weather. A hand lens may be helpful, but is not necessary. This class is suitable for all skill levels. This course counts for ISA Continuing Education credits (10). The recommended reference guide is The Sigley Guide for Trees.
TREE IDENTIFICATION – SPRING WORKSHOP
Join ISA Certified Arborist Kelly Koome for a one-day workshop to ID some of the most common trees in the Lower Mainland. Class begins indoors with an informal discussion of basic classification techniques. We will then move the classroom outdoors. This class is recommended for all skill levels. Dress appropriately for outdoor learning. A hand lens or magnifying glass is helpful, but not necessary. The Sibley Guide to Trees is recommended. Bring a lunch. The International Society of Arboriculture offers the following CEUs (Continuing Education Units) for this course:

TREE IDENTIFICATION – WINTER WORKSHOP
Take your Tree ID skills to the next level with this Winter Tree ID course. Join Kelly Koome (ISA Certified Arborist) as he walks you through the steps to correctly identify trees using tips and tricks he’s learned over the years. The class begins with an online video conference session and continues outdoors for a hands-on field session. Dress appropriately for outdoor learning. A hand lens or magnifying glass is helpful but not necessary. A computer with internet access is required for on-line content. The International Society of Arboriculture offers the following CEUs (Continuing Education Units) for this course:

TREE PRUNING FOR LANDSCAPERS AND GARDENERS
Join a production arborist and learn how to prune young trees for proper form, structure and aesthetics. The first 2 hours are in the classroom. The rest of the day will be spent pruning off-site (transportation required). Bring a hand saw, scabbard and bypass pruners and lunch. Proper PPE required (steel toed boots, hard hat, safety glasses, high vis vest, gloves). Dress for the weather. This class is limited to 14 students. INSTRUCTOR BIOS
SARAH BISHOP
Sarah immigrated from New Jersey in 2014 to join the Urban Forestry program at the UBC Vancouver campus. There she focused on arboriculture and landscape planning. After tree-climbing her way through school for two years, she switched to consulting. As a Consulting Arborists for Koome Urban Forestry Ltd. and van der Zalm & Associates, she does a wide range of work including tree inventories, arborist reports, tree management plans, tree risk assessments, and development site protection.
KELLY KOOME
Kelly is an ISA Certified Arborist and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified Professional. He is regularly contracted by private and institutional clients to assess the health, condition and risk potential of trees throughout the Greater Vancouver Region. Over the past ten years, he has assessed thousands of trees in his work with Land Use Professionals to mitigate development impact.
