COURSE DESCRIPTION

We invite you to this unique course on restoring and nurturing your soil’s health for optimal plant growth.

We will explore:

  • The soil microbiome and its beneficial role in plant growth.
  • Preparing, assembling and managing a thermophilic compost pile.
  • How to correctly produce and apply compost extracts and teas as biological inoculants for your soil and plants.
  • Methodologies and workflows to help rebuild and maintain soil health.
  • General identification of compost and soil microorganisms using a microscope.
  • Project case studies, including conversations with farmers/producers who began their journey with living soil in mind.

  • Commercial farmers (small-medium scale production)
  • Greenhouse operators
  • Park board commissioners (members of a municipality in charge of managing city parks)
  • Arborists, landscape architects and technicians

  • Individuals with a general interest in soil health, regenerative agriculture, agroecology and permaculture

FURTHER INFORMATION

  • Participants are welcome to bring their microscope to the course. We will have three microscopes at the school if you do not have your own.
  • We can provide slides, coverslips and pipettes for the microscope section of the course.
  • Bring your lunch and snacks for the Saturday sessions.

INSTRUCTOR BIO

Jo Tobias is a Regenerative Soils & Living Compost Specialist with the primary goal of helping farmers regenerate the life in their soil.

She founded RootShoot Soils in 2015 and has since been educating and working with producers in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. She combines curious exploration with ecology to successfully guide her clients in restoring the symbiotic relationships between their crops and the soil microbiome.

Refund policy

Fee payments originally made by credit card are credited back to the same card; for expired or invalid credit cards, refunds are made by cheque. Fee payments originally made by cash or cheque are made by cheque. Please allow 3 weeks for processing.

Cancelled courses
When a course is cancelled by Burnaby CCE, a full refund will be issued.

Full time certificate / diploma programs
Requests for refunds received in writing (email) at least 1 week prior to classes starting will have $100 deducted from the course fee. Requests received less than a week prior to classes starting will have $200 deducted from the course fee. There will be no refunds once classes begin.

Part time certificate / diploma programs
Requests for refunds received in writing (email) at least 1 week prior to classes starting will have $25 deducted from the course fee. Refunds received less than a week prior to classes starring will have $50 deducted from the course fee. There will be no refunds once classes begin.

Career & Business Training/General Interest Courses
Requests for refunds received in writing (email) at least 2 days prior to the course starting will be refunded the course fee minus $20. Requests for refunds received less than 2 days prior to the course starting will be refunded the course fee minus $30. There will be no refunds once a course starts.
